Khutba on Rejoicing

Muslims, today is about celebrating and rejoicing - it is about partaking of the blessings of Allah and taking delight in them. Allah’s blessings to us are countless - fine company, fine clothing, good food, good drink - but of all those blessings there is one that far surpasses all the others and is on its own enough for us. And that is Islam- the deen of Allah. As we say every day in the wird:

“Praise be to Allah for the blessing of Islam, it is enough of a blessing.”

Of all the many creatures of Allah, of all the sons of Adam who have lived on this planet since the dawn of time, of all the billions of human beings scattered throughout the earth, Allah has chosen us, each one of us seated here in this mosque, for His favour. Allah says:

the translation of which is: “Say: ‘It is the favour of Allah and His mercy that should be the cause of their rejoicing. That is better than anything they accumulate.’” Allah’s favour, according to the Mufassirun is Islam, and His mercy is His Messenger or the Message that he brought, i.e. the Qur’an. They are what lead to the Abode of Permanence - neverending Gardens of bliss and delight, not the baubles of this world. So, the greatest cause for rejoicement, the greatest reason to celebrate, is because of your being guided to Islam and being made part of the umma of Muhammad.

And that is why the days that Allah has given us for celebration - our two Eids - are directly linked to two of the great pillars upon which Islam is built - the first coming at the conclusion of the obligatory fast in the month of Ramadan and the second coming at the conclusion of the hajj pilgrimage to Makkah in the month of Dhul Hijja. So the Eids are put in place to enable us to show our joy and gratitude to our Lord at having been given the strength and opportunity to take part in and complete those great acts of worship that make us Muslim and separate us from the rest of creation who remain in ignorance and misguidance.

And today, we also celebrate the mercy that Allah showed us in making our deen comprehensive and complete, because it was during these days, during the farewell hajj of the Messenger of Allah, that Allah revealed the following ayat to the Prophet:

the translation of which is: “Today I have perfected your deen for you and completed My blessing upon you and I am pleased with Islam as a deen for you.” Thus, there is no aspect of our lives for which Allah has not given us guidance. Unlike the kuffar, we do not have to wander in confusion and doubt, unsure of our place in existence and unsure of what we should do next. We have a complete and perfected blueprint for living our lives which our Lord finds pleasing, so how can we not be pleased?

And, by means of the act of sacrifice, we both celebrate the mercy Allah showed to His khalil Ibrahim by sparing his son Ismail, the father of the Arabs and forefather of the Messenger of Allah, and substituting a ram in his place and commemorate the incredible unquestioning obedience, trust in Allah and total submission to the Will of his Lord that Ibrahim demonstrated by showing himself willing to sacrifice his own son. By that act, Ibrahim demonstrated what it means to be truly Muslim, for Islam is absolute submission to Allah - it is accepting that the best thing for you is what your Lord wants and not what your self wants. Islam is making your attachment to Allah and His Messenger greater than your attachment to anything else in your life, even your parents and children. Allah says:

the translation of which is: “Say: ‘If your fathers or your sons or your brothers or your wives or your tribe, or any wealth you have acquired, or any business you fear may slump, or any house which pleases you, are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and doing jihad in His Way, then wait until Allah brings about His command. Allah does not guide people who are deviators.’”

The second thing mentioned in the aya we mentioned earlier that should be a cause of our rejoicing is Allah’s mercy, which as we said either refers to the Qur’an or to the Messenger who brought it. Allah says, addressing the Prophet:

the translation of which is: “We have not sent you except as a mercy to all the worlds.” We are immensely privileged, Muslims, to be part of the umma of Muhammad, the pinnacle of creation, the first of the Prophets to be created and the last to be sent and the accepted intercessor by means of whose intercession the gates of the Garden will be opened for the believers to enter. We are immensely privileged to be part of the best community the world has ever seen. Allah says in surat Ali Imran:

the translation of which is: “You are the best community ever to be produced before mankind. You enjoin the right, forbid the wrong and have iman in Allah.” Being part of the community of Muhammad is such a great honour that Messengers of the past, including Adam and Musa, wished that they could have been part of his umma. Indeed, in one hadith narrated by Abu Hurayra, Musa enumerates many of the ways this umma has been blessed:

The Messenger of Allah said, “When Musa received the Torah, he read it and found therein a description of this community, so he said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will be the final people but also the forerunners. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will be intercessors but will also be interceded for. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will respond but will also be responded to. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community whose sacred text will be in their hearts so that they will be able to recite it as if it were in front of them. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will be [permitted] to take the spoils of war. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will be able to partake and eat of what has been given in the way of Allah and yet still be rewarded for it. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will be rewarded with one good action when they intend a good action without doing it, and will be rewarded with ten good actions when they actually do do it. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will receive no wrong action if they intend a wrong action without doing it, and will only receive a single wrong action if they actually do do it. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’

Musa said, ‘My Lord, in the tablets, I have found mentioned a community who will be given knowledge of the first and last, and who will fight the Dajjal during the the years of misguidance. Make that be my community.’ Allah replied, ‘That is the community of Ahmad.’ So Musa said, ‘My Lord, make me part of the community of Ahmad.’ Whereupon Allah replied, ‘I have chosen you over all mankind for My Message and My Word. Take what I have given you and be among the thankful.’ Musa said, ‘I am content, my Lord.’

So, we thank Allah for guiding us to Islam and placing among the umma of His beloved Prophet, and ask Him
